ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY

Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a type of orthodontic treatment used to correct severe abnormalities of the jaws and teeth. Most cases can be treated with orthodontics alone, however in some more severe cases surgical intervention is necessary and can offer dramatic functional and esthetic results. If you require orthognathic surgery, your orthodontist will work with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to ensure you receive the best care possible.

 

How Will I Know If I Need Orthognathic Surgery?

 

After records and a complete exam, your orthodontist can tell you if orthognathic surgery will be needed as part of your orthodontic treatment. The need for orthognathic surgery occurs when the jaws line up incorrectly and a proper bite cannot be achieved with orthodontic treatment or there are esthetic concerns. Should you require orthognathic surgery, braces are placed at the beginning of treatment to straighten teeth. Once your teeth are straightened, you will undergo orthognathic surgery to align the jaws. Braces will remain in place for approximately 6-8 months post-surgery.
